How do you feel about all the development occuring in costa rica?

Costa Rica is a hot spot for developers. They have beautiful rainforests with many different animal and plants and they are being torn down to create a larger tourist market and condos and homes in Costa Rica. Would you purchase a newly developed condo there? Other than not-contributing, any suggestions on taking a stand on putting an end to it?

Almost 30 percent of all the land in Costa Rica is protected from development, either by being part of a national park, a biological reserve of some sort, a national forest, a protected zone, or a privately owned nature preserve. That is quite amazing really. No other country even comes close to preserving such a large amount of its national territory.

Yes, development is continuing to increase throughout much of Costa Rica – unabated and in too many cases irresponsibly. But I believe you are wasting your tears and energy on bemoaning this development merely because it is "development."

Costa Rica is a very poor country – not as poor as some countries in Central America, of course, but poor nonetheless. Even though the people of Costa Rica have their hearts in the right place concerning the protection of so much of their natural resources, they cannot afford to pay the workers and guards and rangers necessary to protect even the "protected" areas from illegal logging and animal poaching.

Rather than simply lamenting the increase in development, why not attempt to help save that which is actually "save-able" – those lands that have some sort of a protected status? Volunteer with the national park service, or send money to environmental organizations in Costa Rica that work to eliminate poachers and loggers in protected zones.

In other words, do something that is actually "do-able" rather than merely whining (and that is what it is, alas) about "taking a stand on putting an end to it."

Development destroying paradise? No! It is not! Paradise is still here – but it needs REAL help. Merely lamenting and "taking a stand" (whatever that may mean) doesn’t cut it.

Where can i find the lowest travel price to Costa Rica (flight & hotel)?

I’m planning a trip to Costa Rica for the last week of September. I’m on a budget but would like to enjoy costa rica to the fullest. Can anyone recommend anything please?

Go on the Internet and look for the cheapest flights to and from Costa Rica.

You can also go on the Internet and check out various hotels and resorts there also.

If you are going to deal with any travel agents at all for this trip – make certain that you check out at least five different ones because this is a very competitive business in Costa Rica and lots of folks have been stung by some of the travel agents there!

Good Luck!

Looking for an all-inclusive in Costa Rica, comparable to Sandos Playacar in Mayan Rivier. Please Help?

Living in Edmonton and thinking about going to Costa Rica and don’t want to be disapointed. We loved Sandos Playacar in the Mayan Rivera. We can’t afford the most expensive resort, but don’t want a dump either. Thank you for any help

Check out the Melia Playa Conchal. I stayed there, and I personally thought it was the most beautiful resort I’ve ever stayed at. I about 100 pictures from the resort too if you would like me to send them to you.

I am traveling to Costa Rica for 2 weeks. What type of backpack should i bring?

My girlfriend and I each need a backpack for a 2 week adventure in Costa Rica. Our trip will mainly find us traveling south down the Nicoya peninsula hitting up many beaches along the way. So we would be needing something very light and easy to carry on the back, but big enough to carry cloths and supplies for 2 weeks…any suggestions with links???? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

My experience backpacking in CR was that it was either warm and kind of humid or hot and very humid.

So I would strongly prefer an external frame pack because they have more of an air-gap between the pack and your body and you don’t get so sweat-soaked. It can be tough to find an external frame pack anymore (REI has some Kelty packs which are good) – X-C skiiers and rock climbers somehow converted everyone else to wearing internal frame packs. Yes, they’re better for highly technical climbing. Yes, you’ll bruise fewer people in the airport. But internal framed packs usually weigh more than externals, can carry less volume, and are hotter.

One possibility is one external framed pack with stuff sacks strapped on for all the fluffy stuff (food, sleeping bags, etc) and a large rucksack for all the heavy stuff (stove, fuel, water, frsh fruit, etc). You can divide the weight pretty evenly, but when you’re in town or taking the bus or heading out from camp for a dayhike, etc, you can stash the big pack and use the other as a daypack.

Bring (or purchase there) trash bags (I like trash compactor bags because they’re much tougher). When you get to laundry or have a sunny day to get things really dry, do so, and store them back in the plastic bag. But for 2 weeks in the tropics, just accept that you’ll be a little funky when it rains for 3 days straight.

You can go two ways on the rain – Goretex and try to keep the clothes underneath dry. Or just wear clothes that will dry fast (nylon or polypro ideally, polyester if you must). Consider that the locals are consistently wear cotton t-shirt, no goretex, no high-tech fabrics. Test-drive some wool/polypro socks in advance. You really want to be nice to your feet for such a long ttrip and soggy cotton socks are a drag. Or, if your feet are tough enough, do the Teva thing and just bring one pair for the occassional stretch of stickers, squitters, etc.

Remember – half as much clothing and twice as much money as you think you’ll need. Univerisal travel advise, but I found I didn’t need the money in CR. But definitely, 1/2 or maybe a 1/3 the clothing. 1 shorts, 1 long and light pants, one t-shirt, one LS shirt. Rain hat. Good socks. Undies if you must. That’s it.

Fishing in Costa Rica: Part One

Fishing off the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica for sportfish. Due to an important federal regulation, you must release any billfish, so we released every sailfish. We ate the Dorado that night (best fish in the world). We saw some dolphins. The ocean was 2 KILOMETRES deep in places. You will hear afrikaans (my native tongue) spoken. Most of the video was recorded about 50 miles off the coast.
