Not only can it be done, but my wife did exactly that just last year. (She is Nicaraguan and we reside in Guadalajara). It can take anywhere from 3 to 5 days depending on weather, road conditions, time of day you leave and day of the week. Also important if you will go straight through or stop over and stay at a hotel to shower and rest, etc. What I would personally do just for adventure's sake is stay a day in Mexico City, spend the night and travel all the following day to Guatemala. Spend the night and get rested. Spend a day and another night in Guatemala, then stop for a day and a night likewise in Honduras, then Nicaragua, then on to San Jose, CR. I know my wife has gone straight from Managua to Guatemala in one long day. I have gone by bus from Managua to San Jose, CR each way several times and it is a nice comfortable ride that takes about 8 hours. It doesn't sound crazy to me! If the thought popped into your head, I'd definately just do it. Take your time. Be patient. If you are going to stay over, try to do so in the major cities, not at the borders which tend to be crap.
References :
it will take you 5 days to get there with the bus. You will have to take each countries buslines to the borders. There are no buses all the way to costarica. You will have to buy a visa for each country at each border crossing.
Best Regards

It's an adventure. Good or bad I don't know but ceratinly is something different. It might take 2-3 days because roads aren't in very good condition in southern Mexico. I personally would not do it.

RENT A CAR IN MEXICO CITY AND DRIVE IT TO NICARAGUA That's more adventureous if you like to drive..
