What should I bring to Costa Rica?

I am going to Costa Rica on a Discovery Student Adventure Trip! Its in July, but I want to be ready! Anyways, so whats the weather going to be like down there and anything else I should know??

It partly depends on where in the country you are going. July is the rainy season but that does not mean it will rain throughout the day. Generally it rains late in the day, tropical downpours. I recommend you bring a poncho, one of those cheap plastic ones you can get in places like a dollar store, often they come in a two pack. Then you can throw one out along the way if you want to. Anywhere inland, Arenal, San Jose, Monteverde, is going to be at higher elevation and will likely be cool at night (60′s) and potentially cold if you are wet. Near the coast, both Pacific and Caribbean, you will not need more than a sweater, and you likely won’t even need that. One warm hooded sweatshirt is all I ever bring, You’ll also only need a few pair of long pants. A few bathing suits are in order if you will be at the coast, rinse them after swimming in the ocean to avoid that funky smell that comes with sea life decomposing in your suit. Did I mention sun dresses and a beach cover up if you are a girl, cute stuff is in order. Bring comfortable walking shoes and again if you are near the coast or doing stuff like white water rafting, bring water shoes or crocks that you can get wet. Men wear long pants anywhere except at the coast. Shorts that go below the knees are also acceptable. Mostly you’ll need t-shirts and shorts, tank tops, a hat for shade, sun block, sunglasses but bring your cheap ones in case you lose them, bug spray (though the bugs are amazingly absent but there are a few carrying things like Dengue which you don’t want. Wear bug spray at dawn, dusk and if hiking in the jungle or hanging out in a dirty town (unsanitary) like Quepos at the bottom of the hill (not Manuel Antonio at the top) or Jaco. A good cheap knapsack is in order and I have a waterproof bag that I can swim with that can hold things like my passport. Don’t leave luggage unattended in your car.
