Interesting, I’m also from Houston been down here for 20 years now and I’m currently living in Los Suenos Resort and Marina, located on the central pacific coastline.
1- I enjoy the central pacific since it has a bit of everything, luxury to laid back and its now a short driving distance to nearly everything you need while in Costa Rica.
2- If you’re looking for a good time for single guys, you will find it in Jaco Beach or Manuel Antonio area.
3- Zipline Canopy, Sport Fishing, Golfing, White water rafting just to name a few.
4- The Rainforests are what you are talking about and Monteverde is the most popular, there are also cloud and dry forest which you will find on the coast.
Hope this helps

Although I like San Jose, I would not spend any time there on a 6 day trip. However, the best and most economical white water rafting is out of there. There is good rafting and canyoning out of La Fortuna (and of course La Fortuna has the Arenal volcano and hotsprings). I think you are probably talking about the Monteverde Cloud Forest (Monteverde also has some of Costa Rica’s best zip lines. I would avoid the Pacific resorts if possible and try either Manuel Antonio or if you like somewhere more laid back either Samara or Montezuma for beach. So I would go first to La Fortuna (2 nights?) , canyon and raft there, then cross the lake to Monteverde spend 1-2 nights there and then head for the Pacific Beach of your choice. The three beaches above are my favorities but there are many others–Tamarindo has a good party scene. If you really want a resort I would suggest one in Guanacaste near Tamarindo.

COSTA RICA/Manuel Antonio- Ten minutes away by car from Quepos Airport and twenty minutes by air from San Jose Int’l. You should check out one of the most beautiful and bio-diverse locations in the world. (about Cities I am not sure).
A 1, 700 acres of forest reserve of Manuel Antonio makes solace the home of countless uncommon species, made reachable by ground and treetop canopy stalks … As jungle abruptly meets the pacific, the adventure persists: elegant falcate beach, offshore islands, coral reefs, lagoons and exotic marine wildlife. Major attractions are Dolphin watching, butterfly gardens, Manuel Antonio and Carara National park…

Well Hello there =D
Go to Colombia and you will have much more fun.
1) Visit Coastal caribbean cities like Cartagena (UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE), Santa Marta (OLDEST CITY IN THE CARIBBEAN and once ONE OF THE RICHEST), San Andres which is a city in an Colombian island near Nicaragua (it’s beautiful), visit beautiful cities in the mountains like Medellin or Colombia’s capital, Bogota (known as the Athens of South America for its culture and education)— BTW Medellin is known for its beautiful girls.
2)There are tons I mean TONS of excellent resorts to choose from. Colombia is putting lots and lots of effort and money in improving its tourism.
3) Santa Marta is not only located next to the caribbean sea, it is also located next to a Sierra Nevada Mountain, which means you have a snow mountain next to the sea, and it is also located near the Natural Park "Parque Nacional Tayrona" in which you willl find gorgeous natural, urban-free beaches, and one of the most beautiful forests in the country. In Bogota, Medellin and other central cities there are many mountains so you can go hiking biking etc.
Colombia is beautiful. I am Colombian and if I knew it wasnt true I wouldnt say it. We are very festive and love to party. We are among the world’s happiest countries (it’s a fact, look it up), we have amazing people and incredible delicious food. The music is great also. Not to make any other countries look down, but Colombias economy is better than that of Costa Rica, we have the 4th largest economy in Latin America.
GO to youtube and type colombia is passion, colombia would you take the risk, Colombia no reservations, Cartagena Colombia, there are tons of videos.

Colombia may begreat, as long as you don’t step foot outside of the big cities, or you might get killed by a Narco (drug cartel). And you can’t travel from city to city by land, or you may get killed. So basically, you can go to Medellin, Cali, Bogota, or Cartegena and stay there your whole vacation you should be ok. Pretty bored, but ok.
Costa Rica is NOT 100% safe by any means, but Colombia still has a ways to go to compete for tourism, that whole cocaine thing would be a good start.
Btw, there are so singles resorts in CR. There are over-priced singles tours that offer guys a chnace to meet beautiful local girls. They cost like $1500-2000 for a week, but what they don’t tell you is that these girls are/were at some point prostitutes. There’s nothing wrong with that, but they make them out to be virgins waiting for an American to sweep them off their feet.
Come to San Jose, there are a few clubs to find local women (Vertigo, Castro’s, and one other I can’t remember). You aren’t far from the volcano, rain forests, and other activities (zip lines). You can take a day tour (they pick you up) and you’ll be back for dinner.
Enjoy.
