Is it possible to take a BUS from Mexico to Costa Rica? If so, how long would it take? Thanks…?

March 10th, 2010

I am thinking of flying into Mexico City, then traveling by bus to Nicaragua. Does that sound crazy? or like a decent adventure?
Thanks! Betsy

Not only can it be done, but my wife did exactly that just last year. (She is Nicaraguan and we reside in Guadalajara). It can take anywhere from 3 to 5 days depending on weather, road conditions, time of day you leave and day of the week. Also important if you will go straight through or stop over and stay at a hotel to shower and rest, etc. What I would personally do just for adventure’s sake is stay a day in Mexico City, spend the night and travel all the following day to Guatemala. Spend the night and get rested. Spend a day and another night in Guatemala, then stop for a day and a night likewise in Honduras, then Nicaragua, then on to San Jose, CR. I know my wife has gone straight from Managua to Guatemala in one long day. I have gone by bus from Managua to San Jose, CR each way several times and it is a nice comfortable ride that takes about 8 hours. It doesn’t sound crazy to me! If the thought popped into your head, I’d definately just do it. Take your time. Be patient. If you are going to stay over, try to do so in the major cities, not at the borders which tend to be crap.

Rios Tropicales Operates Tours Throughout Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a country with a wide variety of environments: rivers and jungles in the mountainous central rainforest; a dry western region of Guanacaste; and either side is flanked by the ocean coasts of the Pacific and the Atlantic. Rios Tropicales has offices and tour locations throughout the country, including outposts in the capital city of San Jose, central Costa Rica, La Fortuna, Canas, and Quepos. Rios Tropicales’ signature trips are the Pacuare River Rafting Adventures, offered in one through four day packages, with multi-day trips staying at their acclaimed rainforest eco-lodge deep within the Pacuare Protected Zone.

Rios Tropicales Operations Center in Cairo, Central Costa Rica, offers private gardens and forest, trails, wildlife, and an ethno botanical garden. It is located at the crossroads of the Reventazon, Pacuare, Sarapiqui, and Tortuguero Rivers – the heart of Costa Ricas renowned rafting waters. The main office is located near the capital city of San Jose, while La Fortuna is near Arenal Volcano; Canas is in the Guanacaste region of western Costa Rica; and Quepos on the Pacific coast. Activities also take guests to some of the most popular and stunning natural resources the country has to offer – from 8 different rivers to protected lands like Tortuguero, Curu Biological Reserve and Damas Estuary.

Backpacking in Costa Rica?

March 9th, 2010

I would like to take a backpacking tour through Costa Rica. I am interested in seeing the wild life and adventure, however, I don’t want to go anywhere rural as I am traveling alone. (I am going for 14 days)

From the researched I’ve done I am considering going to the following places:
Monteverde
Arenal
Manuel Antonia
Tortugero

And I am flying into San Jose.

Do you have any suggestion on other places to visit, or think that the places I have considered not a good choice?

Thank you for your suggestions.

For the wild life (as opposed to wildlife, considerably different) adventure and nothing rural, I suggest New York’s Central Park.

Probably you are best off heading to Monte Verde and figure on spending a few days there, taking various one day hikes. Then move on and keep changing your "base of operations." ALl the places you named have something going for them but you should also try to get to the south of the country, esp the Peninsula de Osa.

Costa Rica rally has only one good hike for several days, going up Cerro CHirripo, al the rest is mostly set up for one day stuff. Most spots have several decent short hikes so you do not have to move every day.

I want to travel to Costa Rica for a week in the middle of March. Where should I go? Where should I stay?

March 7th, 2010

I’m a college student wanting to go on a Spring Break adventure. The budget is relatively tight, so I was wondering where I should stay and go with my roommate keeping in mind that I only have a week.
Also, how many of the people there speak English? I know un poco Espanol, but my roommate is a little nervous because she speaks ZERO Spanish.

the Puerto Viejo area is good for jungle tours and water activities. Its a small town and walking is fine or they rent mopeds and bikes and things. It is right on a beach and there are many nice beaches in either direction. Most of the cheaper places to stay were always booked when i went through. The last time I stayed in that area i went a bit south by bus to a place called manzanillo and they had really cute little motel rooms for twenty a night. It was tile floors and bug proof and even had hot water. Most the resturants by manzanillo where horrible but there was one very very good resturant on the second floor hanging out over the beach. Puerto Viejo is a better town for shopping, resturants, and touristy type stuff. They have a covered outdoor area where they show english movies after dark and serve you a meal or drinks while your watching the show. Many people are on the streets in the evening and its a really fun atmosphere. There are tons of little shops to buy costa rica shirts or nick nacks. There is an internet cafe there. People here seem to have come from all over and finding english speakers isnt a problem at all. The last time i was in Puerto Viejo there was a monkey climbing around in the palm trees by the police station.

Best place to visit/stay in Costa Rica?

March 5th, 2010

Hi,
My family (ranging in ages from 3-67) is considering a week long group vacation to Costa Rica. We’re looking for a location that has historic places to visit, beaches, and adventure tourism like jungle zip-lines or sport fishing. Any recomendations are greatly appreciated, as well as information on the best time of year to visit.

Quepos would suit your family perfectly! It is on the west coast of CR and 55 miles south of San Jose. And, it has all of the tourist amenities that anyone could want in the immediate area.

You can fly to Quepos from San Jose in 29 minutes on Sansa Air for only $98.00 both ways!

Hotel Kamuck is the best hotel there and the most reasonable!

They have fishing tournaments there annually and catch some of the biggest fish in the world right off Quepos in the blue waters of the Pacific! Tournaments held from October through March, and hotel Kamuck will cook your catch!

Only five minutes from the famous Manuel Antonio Nature Park/Beach

I will be there myself in June! – For the Time of my life!

Good Luck!

Outdoor Adventures Costa Rica – Hiking to Cerro Chato Volcano

March 4th, 2010

Hiking to Cerro Chato Volcano, in Costa Rica. With 1100 m. above sea level, the Cerro Chato Volcano is the older brother of the active and magnificent Arenal Volcano. Cerro Chato is near the town of La Fortuna, from where you can make a nice hike all the way to the top of this dormant volcano, where you have stuning views of Volcan Arenal, to later descent to the lagoon directly inside the crater of Cerro Chato.

Does anyone have tips for travelling in Costa Rica?

March 2nd, 2010

I’d like to visit the Guanacaste province in late March. I would like to be able to visit some beaches, take in a few adventures, enjoy some seafood, drink a few beers, and party. Does it make sense to stay in Brasilito? I would like to be able to split time between Tamarindo, Playa Flamingo, and Playa Conchal.

Any thoughts?

que pos and never look back. Take extra baggage, you won’t want to come home. Costa Rica is beautiful Que Pos, a little beach city, is muy tranquillo. passed through there 2 years ago on my way to Panama from Nicaruga. never made it to Pamama. stayed for 6 days. met a guy that went 12 years ago to surf for 10 days. he’s still there. never came back
