Costa rica – seems to be all package tours – why ?

Thinking of a family trip there and was wondering why there are so many package tours. Is there a reason not to plan and do yourself?

There are so many package deals because they sell. Costa Rica is a big travel destination currently, but some people that don’t travel much or are used to traveling to more European destinations are nervous about their first time in Latin America – so the package deals sell well. And they are generally a really good price.

I’m a bit of a travel control freak, so I prefer to do my own. Can’t say that I really save that much money though and the amount of time I put into planning is crazy. But at least I do what I want to do when I want to do it.

Can one travel to Costa Rica without the use of packaged tours?

My wife and I are planning a 10 day trip to Costa Rica with our 18 month son. We have traveled but never done any of those packaged tours as we find them a bit restricting to what they want you to see and do. Most of what I see online for Costa Rica is referenced to packaged tours. Can one just buy air tickets, book hotels, rent a car, grab a good guide book (The New Key to Costa Rica) and be able to find canopy tours or other activities on their own once they arrive in Costa Rica? Or is it better to go with a packaged tour to ease the travel with an infant/toddler? We’d like to spend a few days each at Arenal, Monteverde and Caribbean coast (may be Limon/Tortuguero).

You can definately go it alone, try http://www.vamos4x4.com for your car and check out our 10 day tour itinerary at http://www.PacificLots.com/itinerary for ideas on where to go. Let me tell you, Arenal is ALMOST ALWAYS in the clouds and you can’t see the volcano. The area is overpriced and there is not much to do there except for overpriced tourist attractions like Tabacan and Baldi hot springs. If you check out the price for either of these attractions, you will see what I mean about overpriced. People go to Arenal because other people went there and tell you to go there. The same is true to a large extent with Monteverde. Monteverde is a cloud forest in an area that was colonized by Quakers. It is a long drive and although a very nice place, high altitude and a beautiful area with a good mix of birds and some animals, it is overrated. Try instead your first night at the Martino Hotel in Alejuala, rent a car and go the first day to Poas volcano for a day trip as well as La Paz Waterfall gardens. You’ll have to ask directions a bunch of times but better yet rent a GPS from Vamos when you get there. Then head to Jaco on the central pacific coast (totally skip Limon, dangerous, a port town, not much to see there, and skip Tortuguera unless you want to catch Tarpon, Snook and Mosquitos). Skip the east coast unless you are a surfer and want to head to Puerto Viejo and cross the border into Panama at Boca Del Toros and you are a gnarly rasta type and don’t mind dirty living, hot and humid and sketchy people. They call the east coast the Mosquito Coast and they call the west coast the gold coast. The west coast is more expensive but you can choose the level of expense you want to pay. Stay one night in Jaco at the Vista Pacifica Hotel and then head to Manuel Antonio, stay at the Costa Verde Hotel (expensive but worth it) or try Villas Nicolas. Be sure to go to the national park there, (closed Mondays) and get there early, wear bathing suits and bring food enough to get you through lunch and baby needs. Eat at the Marlin restaurant when you get out of the park, across from the beach, try the ceviche or black bean soup. Eat at the Barba Roja one night and have cocktails at sunset at the Mariposa Hotel (ask for directions to these places, all really close at 5 minutes or so). If you have 10 days, head to Dominical, stay at the Villas Rio Mar Hotel. If you want a good itinerary we run tours and provide hyperlinks to all hotels at http://www.pacificlots.com/itinerary or contact me off line at SteveatPacificlotsdotcom for more info. We sell land and custom homes in Costa Rica. Check out http://wwwpacificlots.com/slide-show

Things to take on vacation in Costa Rica?

My boyfriend and I are going to Costa Rica in August. We’re in a long distance relationship right now and i’ll see him once before we leave. I want to send him a package with some stuff to get him excited about the tip. What are things I could send him to make him think about vacation – or that he could use on vacation – that he might get some enjoyment out of now too? Thanks!

I love this idea! This would be something crazy I would do – and if I thought about it hard enough I can probably remember a time when I did!

1. Send him something practical with a twist. For instance, pick up one of those little first aid kits at the Dollar Store, then customize it. It should come with alcohol swabs and bandaids, but you could add chapstick, individual packets of Tylanol and Benedral, and (wink) condoms :) (course he won’t want to use this until he sees you!)

2. Make him a small day pack and fill it with stuff he might need. First aid kit, sunglasses, hat, etc

3. Most people when going to CR are going to play in the water or play in the dirt. If you are going to play in the water and he doesn’t have an underwater camera – maybe pick up an inexpensive or disposible underwater camera that you guys can use on the trip.

4. Email him CR pictures everyday before the trip or send him a digital frame with CR pictures and then he can replace the pictures with pictures of your trip when he gets back. If you don’t have any – let me know and I’ll send you some – just got back on Saturday.

Can’t think of anything else off the top of my head, but I hope this is helpful!

How To Send Postal Mail To Costa Rica?

My friend lives NEAR San Jose Costa Rica. I asked her to give me her mailing address and she started laughing and said that there is no address because she lives outside the city. She said it is basically directions to the house. Has anyone on Yahoo answers been to Costa Rica and understand what she means? How could I get a package to her if there is no address?
THANKS!
"Areopostale"?
That really tells me nothing.
I need Details PLEASE!

You have 2 choices, 1) have your friend set up a PO box and then sent it to there or 2) You can send your package via one of the courier/package services such as UPS, DHL (who I have heard is excellent) or Fedex. Your friend can then pick it up at their nearest location in San Jose. The courier will give you the location of the pick-up center.

Rates depend on the size of the item. If you know the weight of the item, you can get the info from the any of the courrier websites (assuming you’re mailing from the US to these other places).

Poas Volcano, Grecia & Sarchi. Costa Rica.

We take the Pan-American Highway towards the city of Alajuela. In this route we pass by the Agriculture Monument, the Monument to Juan Santamaria and the famous Mango Park. As we ascend towards the volcano we stop for a brief explanation on our golden bean, coffee, and then continue our trip through fern, flower and strawberry farms.

There is a noticeable change in temperature and vegetation, preparing us for the pleasure in the exuberant cloud forest of Poas Volcano.

In the Volcano we will have time to enjoy the impressive main crater with its sulfur fumaroles, and hike on a trail to the beautiful Botos Lagoon. We will learn about the different ecosystems in the park. After visiting the volcano, we will have time to enjoy a delicious lunch in one of the typical restaurants of the area.

Our third stop will be in the beautiful Grecia. Considered one of the cleanest towns of Latin America, it is home of the only Metal Church in Central America and a of national monument that fills its inhabitants with pride. In order to catch a glimpse of the local lifestyle we will also visit the central market area.

Our last stop is on Sarchi, known as the Cradle of Costa Rican Artisans because of its fine workshops. Here we will have time to enjoy the artistic work of the local artisans as they create the famous typical oxcart. You will be able to shop for that special souvenir to take home.

Suggested Equipment: light jacket, comfortable shoes, binoculars and camera.

How long does it take for a package to get to Arkansas from Costa Rica?

It all depends on what method you use tos hip it. Using traditional Costa Rican postal services, it can take up to 2 weeks for a parcel to arrive in the US by regular service, 3-5 days express mail, and 4-6 weeks via surface (ship). If you use FedEx or UPS, it normally takes 1 day for it to arrive in the USA. However, expect to pay a lot for these couriers.

how can I send a package to a post office box in costa rica?

I don’t have a physical address to ship to, just a P.O. box number in Alajuela.

In addition to what others have said, I would make sure not to declare it to be worth a lot. They will meticulously inspect it if it is declared to be worth a lot and also probably charge you huge tariffs especially if it is a large package. A family friend in Costa Rica was mailed a Christmas ornament from her mom and customs in Costa Rica declared it to be a car part and charged her (huge) tariffs as such.
