I lived in Costa Rica in 2005 and 2006 and have been back several times to see the doctors and dentists here. Do yourself a huge favor and DO NOT RENT A CAR ! Take a look at the info available at our embassy here and other google sources and you will find that this country has the highest deaths per passenger mile of any place in the world. Their roads are also horrible or hardly existent, and there is wide spread crime. Use professional tours that insulate the tourist against the reality of this country, stay in the Capital San José — ugh– and you can take tours to the volcanos and to Witches Rock on the Pacific also. Do some reading and up date yourself so it´s not a total shock. I´ve been a traveler for all my life, worked for a major airline for 37 years, and I don´t find garage, dirt, crumbling infrastructure and unforced laws to be romantic. Also, costs here are not that cheap at all, for food etc. It´s all hype about this country. Ah, well, find out for yourself.
There´s no Place Like HOme.
ps they do not speak English here

Do not forget the Arenal Volcano, I went there one month ago and I stayed at Arenal Springs and book it with http://www.arenalonline.com and when I got a response back they gave 15% off just to book with them and that I reserve Hot Springs and got 10%off.
Was really good trip and you will love it. Have fun and good luck
