How much does food cost in Costa Rica if you cook it yourself?
I was thinking of going to costa rica for a month or two, how much will it cost me to buy food there?
Right now I eat very well in America for $250 US dollars a month unless i go out to eat.
If you cook everything yourself, and keep away from the imported foods and can goods and buy at the local markets and/or roadside stands – for $150 a month you will eat like a king.
Here are a few costs:
Bananas: .50-$1 a bunch
Mangos: .5-10 cents each, if not free, they grown just about everywhere.
Rice 1lb: .25-.50 cents
3lbs of Fish: 3-$5
Coffee 1lb: $1
Sugar 1lb: .50-.75 cents
3lbs of Chicken: 3-$6
Lettuce one bunch: .20-30 cents
Local can goods: tuna, soup, sauces, etc, .10-.75 cents each
Meat: round steak/hamburger etc $1.50-$2.50 a lb.
Milk: $1.50-$2 a gallon
Bottle or Canned Soft Drinks: .25-75 cents each
Beer: .75-$2 each

Well, I like to cook for myself, and I think that with $200/month you are able to eat very well, also here going out to eat is cheaper, but buying groceries and cooking is almost the same.
Still buying at the market, eating chicken and fresh fruit, it will be cheaper and healthier too, remember that canned, and most supermarket aisle food is imported, that means probably more expensive that in the states.

For one, cooking healthy food and nothing expensive like lobster or shrimp you can do it with $100, give or take (without going out). I live with my brother and we both chip in around $100 each and we have enough food for the month (meat, fish, vegetables, etc).
There is an online supermarket, its expensive but at least it will give you an idea. Remember 545 colones is $1.

Purchase whatever you think you need for a month and check the total on the cart. Again, remember you can find cheaper prices here, its just to give you an idea.
