What are these beetles in Costa Rica called?

In Costa Rica, I saw big beetles (probably about 1.5" long) on their backs just wiggling their legs helplessly. The tour guide said the males did that to each other to eliminate competition. They would just die that way because they cannot flip themselves back over. What is the name of this beetle?

There’re a lot of beetles that you can find in Costa Rica.

Those big beetles are called: Escarabajo

Commonly known as "Ruedacada" or "Caquero"

The scientific name is: Orthognathus subparallelus

The can flip over ONLY if they use the wings, but I think they’re not smart enough to do it and in the most of the cases, without external help like the wind or other bugs, they cannot flip back over and die after trying.

They are called ¨abejones de mayo¨ because you will not see them around usually until the month of May when they seem to be all over certain parts of the country, the bang against the walls and are attracted to light, there are several variations of this type of beetle as well as different sizes.
